Une entreprise créée par d'anciens cadres du fabricant d'assistants personnels Palm a dévoilé lundi un appareil nomade répondant au nom de code "Helix" et combinant les fonctions de console de jeu vidéo, de lecteur de musique et d'agenda à partir du système d'exploitation Palm.

La société Tapwave fondée il y a deux ans par l'ancien vice-président du développement des produits Palm à l'échelle mondiale, Peng Lim, et l'ex-vice-président de la gestion des produits Palm, Byron Connell.

Tapwave prévoit de pénétrer le marché des supports mobiles de jeux vidéos qui s'est révélé très actif ces derniers mois.

Le prix et la date de commercialisation d'Helix n'ont pas été communiqués.

Entre autres partenaires techniques, les dirigeants de Tapwave ont mentionné ATI Technologies, Sony, Motorola et Yamaha ajoutant à la liste des partenaires dans l'édition de jeux vidéos Activision, Infogrames et Midway Games qui ont accordé des droits de licence de leurs meilleurs jeux.

L'entreprise a aussi pris licence du système d'exploitation PalmOS et d'une gamme d'outils de conception de jeux auprès respectivement de PalmSource, filiale de Palm, et de Fathammer.

Connell, P-DG de Tapwave, et Lim, vice-président du marketing, entendent toucher les 18-34 ans qui ont fini d'explorer les capacités de la console portable Game Boy Advance de Nintendo .

La gamme des Game Boy domine le marché des consoles portables depuis plus de dix ans, repoussant les assauts de consoles concurrentes aujourd'hui disparues telles que GameGear, TurboDuo ou Lynx.

Mais le marché de la portabilité redevient actif. Nintendo a commercialisé deux nouvelles Game Boy, l'Advance et l'Advance SP, et le fabricant finlandais de téléphones portables Nokia prépare le lancement d'un téléphone combinant des fonctions de jeu vidéo appelée N-Gage.

Les concepteurs d'Helix revendiquent une palette de couleurs de fois supérieure à son homologue japonaise et près de 16 fois supérieur à la finlandaise. Ils évoquent aussi une résolution d'écran bien plus fine que les deux modèles sus-cités et un écran plus grand.

Connell a déclaré qu'il serait possible de jouer en plusieurs formats et d'écouter des fichiers musicaux au format MP3 comme de visionner des photographies. Toute une gamme d'applications liées à Palm OS seront aussi disponibles.

Des instituts statistiques ont estimé les ventes d'appareils de jeu vidéo et de logiciels à 10,4 milliards de dollars pour l'année 2002 aux Etats-Unis et les estiment à plus de 30 milliards de dollars à l'échelle mondiale en 2003.

Lim et Connell se sont associés à d'anciens cadres de Palm dont Marian Cauwet, nommé vice-président technique, poste qu'il occupait également chez Palm et David Wenning qui a pris dans la nouvelle société le poste de directeur des ventes./

A company started by former senior executives from handheld computer maker Palm Inc. PALM.O on Monday unveiled a handheld product code-named "Helix" that combines video gaming, music and the organizer from the Palm operating system.

The company, named Tapwave, was founded two years ago by former Palm vice president of worldwide product development Peng Lim and vice president of product management Byron Connell.

It plans to enter a marketplace -- portable video gaming -- that in the last few months has ballooned.

Lim serves as president and chief executive of Tapwave, while Connell is senior vice president of marketing. Other top executives are Marian Cauwet, the vice president of engineering who held the same role at Palm; and sales head David Wenning, also a Palm veteran.

Pricing and availability details for the Helix have not yet been made public, but what is known is that the company boasts a high-profile lineup of hardware and software partners.

Among the hardware companies contributing products and engineering to Helix are ATI Technologies Inc. ATY.TO , Sony Corp. 6758.T , Motorola Inc. MOT.N and Yamaha Corp. 7951.T

Games publishers who have already agreed to license some of their top titles for the platform include Activision Inc. ATVI.O , Infogrames Inc. IFGM.O and Midway Games Inc. MWY.N .

The company has also licensed the PalmOS operating system from Palm subsidiary PalmSource and game development tools from Fathammer.

Market research firms have pegged total video game hardware and software sales at $10.4 billion in 2002 in the United States alone, and global hardware and software sales in 2003 are expected to top $30 billion.

'MORE SOPHISTICATED GAMER'

"Nobody was addressing the need of the more sophisticated gamer in a mobile sense," Connell told Reuters recently.

Connell and Lim said the target audience for the Helix consists of people 18 years to 34 years old who have largely "graduated" from Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s 7974.OS Game Boy Advance portable gaming unit.

The Game Boy platform has had a stranglehold on the portable gaming market for well over a decade, handily defeating any and all comers, including long-gone devices with names like GameGear, TurboDuo and Lynx.

But the portable market has become increasingly crowded again. Nintendo is selling two Game Boys, the Advance and the Advance SP, and Finnish cell phone maker Nokia NOK1V.HE is preparing to launch a cell phone and game deck combination device called the N-Gage.

The Tapwave executives hope to compete with those two units on the basis of superior technology.

The Helix boasts twice the color palate of the Game Boy and nearly 16 times that of the N-Gage. It offers a screen resolution well sharper than either one and a much larger screen size.

Connell said the device will play full-motion video in a number of formats, as well as music in the MP3 format. It will also ship with a photo viewer and all the productivity applications that are part of the Palm OS.
