Orange Code Camp Conference

Sept. 18th, 2004 13:16 by sdelucaPermalink | TrackBack: http://deluca.biz/trackback/216 | del.icio.us logoDel.icio.us — exists for 7 years & 8 months ago — Rate:

The Orange Code Camp took place from Sept 13rd to 15th at Futuroscope. About 200+ people was attending the conference.

The conf was mainly driven by Orange UK people, but a lot of France Telecom R&D San Francisco folks was there as well.

A lot of insights about many subjects was given throughout small sessions.

I was speaker at the "3D for Java" session, and was really pleased that the subject is currently into many minds. Around 30 people was attending this. I demonstrated 3D on Ege, compared to JSR-184, and got a chance to tell some words about multiplayer ;)

Among many others, I give you a summary about the most interesting sessions.
Sdl

3D on Java

Others speaker was one from APOGE, and one from Nokia.

It is clear that despite the real interest people are showing in 3D java, most of them have no or few experience in 3D.
Most of them just discovered what's available today and have almost no clear view of what's is likely to happen next year.
Mostly was concernen about other products license fees.
Also, the lack of tools is probably one of the main thing that prevent people to just start in this area.
I've got the opportunity to introduce Ege to the audience, ran several demos, and compare performance against JSR-184 software implementation. People were impressed about the perf of Ege, and many questions raised

Advanced Testing Tools and the future of testing

This was one of the most interesting session, presented by two of the FT R&D San Fransisco folks.
It is clear that the operators - not only Orange World - want some solid evidence that the apps theyre are distributing are good, non-malicious and fit the industrial standard of quality.
As they cannot rely on the sole developpers or the publishers words, they are developping many tools that help in that area: J2ME MIDlet Static analysis and On-device Testing tools

Microsoft Mobile Today and Tomorrow .NET 2 Compact Framewok

Basically Microsoft introduced its current platform for smartphone development .NET 1.1 Compact Framework.
Microsoft floks done a pretty nice demonstration in programming a snake game with score publishing on the web using managed C# language in a 3/4 hour.
They then introduced us with the next release of their platform: .NET2, which includes among other things DirectX 9 (3D component, same as PC and Xbox)

UMTS: Tales and Legends

This was a tedious prez, very technical dealing with the gluts of radio telecom and related hardwares, lots of folks were leaving the room during the conf. Nevertheless, we were told a very interesting bunch of what we may consider as flaws:
  • UMTS is - of course - not covering a lot of people in UK or france
  • Orange is still dealing with the architecture, doing a lot of tweaking.
  • UMTS provides LESS performance than GRPS for small amount of data interchange (break even around 15 to 20 Kb
  • 3G user is allocated bandwith according the current usage is doing of the net - 4 classes are given, from the more demanding to the less. Depending on this class, it may have from 64Kbit/s tup to 384kbit/s. IT IS THE NETWORK that determines the class, not the user - a user profile exist, but won't be used by the user himself.
  • You can expect a 250 to 300 ms roundtrip (Mobile <-> Server) as nominal value (which are good, when compared to GPRS)
  • 3G users may be switched back to 2G network depending on network traffic condition. It takes 5 sec minimum to return to 3G - this 5 sec is due to radio transmission behavior.
  • 2Mbit/s dream: it is pure hype, simply a legend; and correspond to the total bandwith avail to the network that is divided into user usage, signal and control packets. IN NO CASE the bandwith can exceed 384Kbit/s
  • *** Don't forget that all these figures are depending on network condition ***
