Proxy photographie : Votre iBook comme boite à lumière

Jan. 7th, 2006 22:28 by sdelucaPermalink | TrackBack: http://deluca.biz/trackback/311 | del.icio.us logoDel.icio.us — exists for 6 years & a month ago — Rate:  — — Sorry, this content is not available in english.

Proxy photography: Your iBook as a light box

Jan. 7th, 2006 22:28 by Permalink | TrackBack: http://deluca.biz/trackback/312 | del.icio.us logoDel.icio.us — updated on Sept. 19th, 2006 01:50 exists for 6 years & a month ago — Rate:

During a proxy photo session in low intensity light, I had regulated a red spot so that it falls on the subject like a spot.

But to obtain the right light I had in mind--look at the right hand photo--I needed an additional yellow spot. Unfortunatly, I had no such spot.

Then it came to me an idea, which I could implement directly at the time of the session.

I said to myself that finally, the screen of my iBook, which was there beside the camera could act as diffuser of light. Actually, if I direct its screen towards the scene, it emits by its broad surface of 10 inches by 9 a soft light which could lead me to an interesting result.

I made some tests which encouraged me to seek more still.

The articulation of the screen is perfect to be used as projector. I lay out the open iBook like a book, posed on the scene on its side (see photo of right-hand side).

The remain thing was to be able to colour the source easily, and to regulate the intensity.

I've found that the best way to proceed was to create a Web page where I'd pass the hue in parameter this way:
http://deluca.biz/sdlphotostudio.html?color=FF0 (yellow).

To modulate the intensity, there are three ways of proceeding:
  • Regulate the luminosity of the screen directly with the keys of the iBook.
  • Regulate the size of the window of the browser.
  • Simply to regulate the color in an adapted way, for instance, AA0 for less luminous yellow.

Here we are. You can use my diffuser, just click on http://deluca.biz/sdlphotostudio.html and give me feedback about its suitability for you. Any suggestion or improvement request are welcome.

Coloured Photography Light Using a Laptop
Stéphane de Luca has an interesting DIY coloured light - his Apple iBook!
This probably has most utility in macro photography but it shows some great creative uses for stuff you happen to have around anyway.

Another good use of a laptop screen is for a background in macro shots. Set the colour of the background to nicely set off the object you are shooting, it serves as both a backdrop and back-light simultaneously!
